LOUDSPEAKER RIGIDITY ENHANCER

The piston

EXPLANATION

The sound quality of a loudspeaker depends on many factors, including the rigidity and resonance of the cabinet. Of the cabinet’s various walls, the sides are generally the seat of the greatest vibrations due to their size. A simple finger-tapping test is likely to demonstrate that the sides sound “hollow” in some places. High-end manufacturers generally use very heavy, expensive materials (such as very thick MDF, composites, and aluminium). However, there is a simpler solution, which is to reinforce the walls from the inside. The disadvantage of MDF reinforcements, the most commonly used material, is that they have to be very wide to be effective. This reduces the usable volume and access for mounting the drivers. Moreover, they cannot be added after manufacture. The Piston is made of aluminium and therefore offers very high rigidity combined with a small footprint.

NEODIO HAS DEVELOPED A SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE SOLUTION TO IMPROVE YOUR LOUDSPEAKERS

  • First check your cabinet’s possibilities in terms of accommodating Pistons: it needs to have parallel internal walls, and accessibility by removing one or two drivers.
  •  Tap the sides of your speaker to determine where the sound is most “hollow”. For a bookshelf speaker, one piston is sufficient, a column speaker usually requires two pistons. The Piston is applied to the middle of the side (widthwise).
  • The Piston can be installed in cabinets with an internal width of between 14 and 20 cm, which covers most speakers. To determine the internal width, dismantle a loudspeaker to measure the thickness of the side walls and subtract twice this thickness from the outer width.
  • You then need to remove or cut away the internal absorbent material from the cabinets to allow the Piston to adhere to the walls.
  • Remove the protective film over the adhesive with tweezers and stick the female part of the piston on first. Apply pressure for 10 seconds and the Piston will be stuck to that side. Slide the male part out to the other side and apply pressure for another 10 seconds. You can then tighten the two screws with a hexagon key. The Piston is now installed. Note that the adhesive takes 48 hours to reach maximum effect.
  • If you don’t get it right the first time, remove the adhesives, cut new ones and repeat the process. Neodio supplies additional adhesive strips with the Pistons.

AN IMMEDIATE RESULT

Once the first cabinet has been modified, a finger test will demonstrate the difference in the vibration damping of the sides. The end result is better timbre and dynamics.
